paperback. Condition: Very Good. Most of our very good books have only minor imperfections such as shelf wear consistent with a new book that's sat on a bookshop shelf for a year or two. Occasionally we may miss other minor imperfections as we have to grade books at speed. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. First major monograph on this American-born, Bali-based painter and former professional dancer.Lydia Janssen was born in 1976 in Lansing, Michigan, and received a BA from Sarah Lawrence College in 1998. After graduating, she moved to New York City to pursue a professional dance career on a scholarship at the Merce Cunningham Studio School, performing with modern dance troupes Pam Tanowitz Dance Company and Jordana Toback/POON Dance Company. Her dancing career ended after suffering several injuries, leading her to focus fully on her art practice. She spent a year at the Graduate Fine Arts Department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, before returning to New York to study at the Art Students League (2005-07) with Larry Poons and Ronnie Landfield, where she won the prestigious Red Dot Award for Excellence in Painting. This book surveys the emotional landscape of Lydia Janssen's relationship to her art, as she attempts to paint movement and to move with paint. The viewer's kinaesthetic reaction is as significant as their visual response. Although her work is an autonomous, autobiographical journey, it is also like dancing with and on the canvas. The fundamental inspiration for Janssen's art practice lies in the ineffability of dance as an art form: its drama, spectacle, and the tragedy of the body falling victim to its physical and emotional demands, as well as its pleasures. Janssen's lively geometry and muted colours, make for edgy narratives on the fragility of the human body, survival after trauma, personal freedom, violence, intimacy, the symbolism of animals, and the erotic experience.Lydia Janssen has held solo exhibitions in Asia and the USA, including most recently at the Redsea Gallery in Singapore and the Susan Eley Fine Art Gallery in New York. Her work can be found in private collections in the US, UK and Asia. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Wang Zhiyuan was born in 1958 in Tianjin, China, and graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing. He moved to Australia in 1989 to earn his Masters of Fine Arts in Sydney and worked there for over a decade, also serving as chief adviser for the prestigious White Rabbit Collection of contemporary Chinese art. He currently lives and works in Beijing. For Wang Zhiyuan, the things we discard, reject, or disregard are vital and determinant, and often lovelier or uglier than we once thought. His boldly individual and ambitious style, using enormous and colourful metaphors, cleverly parodies the many contradictions of globalised consumption, market insatiability, politicised culture, and social decay. His work is part of major collections in the Asia-Pacific region. Wang Zhiyuan was born in 1958 in Tianjin, China, and graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Born in 1980 in Harbin, China, Song Yige grew up in this northeastern industrial city in the province of Heilongjiang. Quickly devoted to art as a child, she was known to forgo treats in order to buy water colours, brushes and drawing paper. Song graduated in 2007 from Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, before moving to Beijing where she currently lives and works. During her formative years she gained the patronage of artist Zeng Fanzhi. His mentorship and their creative collaboration continues and has resulted in her emergence onto the international art scene. This first ever monograph showcases Song Yige's first decade of painting and features her oil on canvas works. The artist's characteristically emotional metaphors and depictions of the modern world involve everyday objects, anonymous characters, animals, and imaginary settings to create her atmospheric effects. Through fascinating large-scale and often melancholic works, Song Yige merges her childhood memories with autobiographical details to reinterpret contemporary life within the confinements of busy cityscapes. Thin layers of paint with dramatic contrasts result in a captivating glow which has already beome her signiature style. Her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at prominent institutions and galleries across Asia and a recent debut show curated by Zeng Fanzhi at the Marlborough Fine Art Gallery in London, which was her first exhibition outside of Asia. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Hardback. Condition: New. The first, intimate visual documentation of artists who have influenced and transformed the Chinese art scene over the last two decades German photographer Thomas Fuesser has been following artists in China since 1993, when he was first invited by renowned Dutch curator Hans van Dijk (1946-2002) to join a group of foreign journalists and photographers to visit the up-and-coming members of the then fledgling Beijing and Shanghai art scenes. Reports on this visit, by New York Times art critic Andrew Solomon and several others, later played a major role in the making of prominent artists, such as Fang Lijun, Wang Guangyi, and Yue Minjun. Over many years, Fusser has developed close and enduring professional relationships with the artistic community in China. His striking portraits tell their stories and depict their work and personalities in an entirely distinct style, documenting a part of contemporary history and an immensely dynamic time in China. Recording the lives and thought processes of leading artists, such as Ai Weiwei, Cai Guo-Qiang, Zeng Fanzhi, Zhang Peili, Feng Mengbo, Wu Shanzhuan, and Zhou Tiehai, `SHORT CUTS', inspired by Robert Altman's concept of multiple parallel destinies that interact, provides a fascinating visual insight into the heart and soul of Chinese society.…
