Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Writer's Workshop takes an approach to teaching writing that is new only because it is so old. Today, rhetoric and composition typically proceed by ignoring what was done for 2,500 years in Western education. Gregory Roper, on the other hand, helps students learn to write in the way the…great writers of the past themselves learned: by carefully imitating masters of the craft, including Cicero, Thomas Aquinas, Charles Dickens, Sojourner Truth, James Joyce, and Ernest Hemingway. By living in their workshops and apprenticing to these and other masters, apprentice writers--like apprentice musicians, painters, and blacksmiths of the past--will rapidly improve the complexity of their art and discover their own native voices. Interspersed into chapters full of sound practical advice and challenging assignments are reflections on Great Ideas from "Realism and Impressionism" to "Nominalism and Modern Science." Perfect for the college or even high school writing classroom--as well as a marvelous book for homeschoolers and others who would like to improve their own writing--The Writer's Workshop is a fine practical guide, and Dr. Roper a friendly yet demanding teacher-mentor. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. With a name bearing witness to Peter and Paul's meeting on the Appian Way, Due Santi has been the setting for a thousand different stories. This collection celebrates twenty-five years of such stories at the current campus and half a century of the University of Dallas Rome Program. The narr…ative stretches from last semester's G[r]eek Olympics to the chariot races of ancient Bovillae and strolls from the history of the villa to the future of the vineyard. Anyone who still dreams of Due Santi will instantly recognize the timeless landscape and the people who lovingly made it home, even if only for a little while. Paper Back. Condition: New. 'Relevance,' writes Gregory Roper, 'is overrated.' In most high school and college classrooms today, students suffer through 'dreary, predictable' composition textbooks with a monotone treatment of writing in both content and style. Most examples are magazine articles from such cultural organs as the…New Yorker, Atlantic, and Harper's. Certainly laudable examples of contemporary prose can be found among these periodicals, but pedagogically speaking, they lack variety when it comes to style. Their contemporary conversational tone tends to hide its structure in a voice 'not too distinctive as to offend.' English professor and Writing Program director Gregory Roper maintains that learning how to structure composition using these current models is extremely difficult, not to mention fundamentally contrary to the way rhetorical instruction has been taught for roughly two thousand years-that is, by imitation. Highlighting centuries of strange forms, structures, and especially voices, Roper shows how to imitate the masters, and thereby (eventually) gain one's own voice. Examples are taken from a spectrum of writers-Cicero, Joyce, Chesterton, Hemingway, Aquinas, and more-as well as from student samples, proving that, while not necessarily easy, good writing can be learned. The exercises are crucial; this book is meant for doing, not just reading. Also included are reflections on Great Ideas from the Great Books, meant to encourage students to consider writing as an interaction with the larger world of ideas as well as their souls.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Learning to think well means learning to argue well. But it's not easy: Teachers often say they spend more time teaching students how to write than covering their subject, and students often wonder what all the fuss is about. What's the point when AI has all the answers anyway? The truth is t…hat writing persuasively has never been more important. In Mastering the Four Arguments, Dr. Gregory Roper makes it simple for teachers and students alike, revealing that underneath every broiling debate of our time, there are actually only four kinds of arguments. These arguments are the core of stasis theory, devised two thousand years ago in ancient Rome to help lawyers and political orators cut past rhetorical distraction and identify the real point of controversy in any debate. Master the four arguments, and you'll find writing papers and winning debates with friends much easier. And you'll find that learning to argue well is a great first step toward something much bigger: By pursuing the truth, you'll be on your way to learning to live well, too. With its clear, straightforward approach, helpful exercises and examples, and notes for students and teachers alike, this book will make you the master of any argument.
