Astute, Chinese-speaking Gilbert lived in China for 17 years, and wrote serials for the Shanghai North China Daily News, from which much of the book is drawn. While he "likes, admires and loves" China and the Chinese, he feels it necessary to "spank" the "spoiled and capricious" "winsome and temperamental jade," which is "consistently overpraised and overrated." Excellent reading from the heady 1920s.
