Tasked with planning and executing secret operations, including the notorious but failed 1861 attempt to relieve Union forces at Fort Sumter, Fox's letters here reveal the inner workings of the U.S. Navy during this tumultuous time, with all its complexities, rivalries, and ultimate heroism.
