    Mass Market Paperback. Condition: Good. Valigursky, Ed; Orban, Paul; Emsh, Ed; Fagg, Ken; Freas, Kelly; Palais, Rudolph (illustrator). First Edition. UK edition. Includes the stories in the June 1954 US edition, with the exception of the Ludwig story and not all the essays and artwork, but has the same cover art by Fagg. Contains The Colonists by Jones (illustrated by Orban), The First Day of Spring by Wolf (illustrated by Emsh), No Strings Attached by del Rey (illustrated by Freas), The Valley by Stockham (illustrated by Emsh), The Ordeal of Colonel Johns (illustrated by Palais) and The Link by Nourse (illustrated by Palais). The contents also include an essay Snaring the Human Mind by Leiber. Someone has scribbled very hard on the inside of the front cover leaving a number of small holes and tears. The back cover has a two inch crease to the top corner and a stain next to the spine. One or two spots to the page edges and there is some page browning but they are otherwise unmarked. Postage charge will be reduced by £1.50 when the order is processed.

Small gilt decoration on front cover. Top edge gilt. Deckled edges. Vol. I published 1918. Vol. II published 1919. 6 1/2" x 9 1/2." Vol. I: 440 pages and one black-and-white frontispiece portrait, complete. Vol. II: 492 pages and one black-and-white frontispiece portrait, complete. Each volume has one additional page in back listing the other titles previously published by the Naval History Society. Each volume has Kemble's bookplate tipped in on front pastedown. Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning throughout and slight wear to fore-edges. Covers are very clean and intact except for light age toning throughout, a few dampstains at top, and some darkening or smudging to spine. Binding is tight. Each volume and the entire set are Very Good. Vols. I and II are respectively Vols. IX and X in the Publications of the Naval History Society series. A two-volume set containing reprinted confidential correspondence of Gustavus Vasa Fox (1821-1883), an American naval officer, during his time as Assistant Secretary of the Navy from 1861-1865. Fox was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. Fox had also served during the Mexican-American War. John Haskell Kemble (1912-1990) was an American history professor at Pomona College and a maritime historian. Kemble also served in the U.S. Navy from 1941-1946 and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Vol. II has a printed letter laid in from the Naval Historical Society explaining the delayed publication of said volume (funding issues).
