Résumé : Visant à éclairer le sens des principes générateurs de la démocratie moderne (l'égalité des conditions, l'autonomie de l'homme, l'indépendance des individus), Robert Legr…os tente, dans cet ouvrage, de montrer qu'ils ne sont pas simplement issus d'idées nouvelles, d'une compréhension de l'homme qui serait enfin libérée des préjugés et de l'obscurantisme, ni le simple produit d'un processus historique ou social, ou d'une transformation du mode de production, mais émanent plus profondément d'une expérience neuve d'autrui, de soi, de notre humanité ; mais aussi, dans le même temps, de l'au-delà, de la nature, de l'origine des normes, en un mot du monde. Il est vrai que l'égalisation des conditions, l'autonomisation et l'individualisation qui sont à la source de la démocratie suscitent une dissolution de toute image de l'homme, et font naître l'idée d'une indétermination essentielle de notre humanité. Pourtant la reconnaissance de l'autre comme semblable, instaurée par la démocratie, ne relève pas d'une abstraction mais d'une expérience sensible de notre humanité. Dans quelle mesure l'expérience démocratique est-elle libératrice ? Telle est la question qui est au centre de cet ouvrage. Robert Legros tente de la traiter en s'inspirant de l'enseignement de la phénoménologie. Il montre en effet que la démocratie est libératrice dans la mesure où son avènement (l'égalisation progressive des conditions) est lié à une mise en suspension des identités d'appartenance, qui est indissociable de ce que la phénoménologie appelle une suspension du monde " naturel ", une mise entre parenthèses de toutes les évidences du monde quotidien. Et dans la mesure où cette mise en suspension collective des identités d'appartenance ouvre à une expérience d'autrui, de soi, du monde, qui incite à préserver l'indétermination essentielle de l'homme sans le dissoudre dans le vide d'une universalité abstraite. À propos de l'auteur : Robert Legros est professeur de philosophie à l'Université de Caen. Il enseigne également la philosophie à l'Université libre de Bruxelles.
