Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The first four volumes (of six total) published in 1787, 1788, 1790 and 1792, respectively. 8vo. Title page vignette, vi, 101 pp.; title page vignette, vi, 102-208 pp.; title page vignette, vi, 209-310 pp.; title page illus. vi, 311-413 pp. Illustrated throughout with musical scores…and lyrics. Bound in modern brown buckram. Edited and published by James Johnson from 1787 to 1803, the six volumes which comprise The Scots Musical Museum were devoted entirely to traditional Scottish folk songs and music. The popularity and influence of the publication was due in no small part to the fact that approximately one third of the six hundred songs were contributed by Robert Burns, who also assisted Johnson with the editing. A few of Burns' more popular songs included in these four volumes are: Auld Lang Syne (Vol. I); Ae Fond Kiss (Vol. IV); Country Lassie (Vol. IV); Green Grow the Rashes (Vol. I); John Anderson My Jo (Vol. III); Ye Banks an' Braes o' Bonnie Doon (Vol. IV). According to Egerer, one can know only relatively how early the printing of each volume is by the number of song attributions to Burns in the indicies: the earliest had few to no attributions as Burns' widespread fame had yet to occur; as this unfolded, later printings had his name appended to more of his contributions. Thus the fewer, the earlier. In these four volumes Burns' name does not appear in Vol. I or Vol. II; he is attributed to a mere six each in Vol. III and Vol. IV. Also, according to Egerer, the earliest printing of Vol. I lacks a border around the title page vignette, and this copy so lacks it. Vol. I has scattered foxing/aging. Vol. II has light scattered foxing. Vol. III has two small pieces of aged cellophane tape front of title, else quite bright. Vol. IV is also quite bright. Overall very good. Each of the six volumes of the Scots Musical Museum are scarce, and to have the first four volumes collected and bound together is rare.

Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition, first issue of this influential collection of traditional folk music of Scotland. Octavo, two volumes comprised of volumes one and three out of six, bound in full contemporary calf with gilt ruling to the spines, vignettes to the title pages, engraved throughout with musical stanzas. Presentation copy, inscribed b…y Robert Burns on the title page of volume one, "To Mr. Whyter from Robt. Burns" and on the verso of the title page of volume three, "Remember me! Ro. B." Robert Burns contributed some 200 songs, new or adapted to the successive volumes of The Scots MusicalÂMuseum. In good condition with bumping and rubbing to the extremities, losses to the hinges of both volumes, splitting to the spine of volume three, final leaf in volume one trimmed by binder into plate mark volumes one lacks five leaves from pages 23-24, 49-52, 93-96. Housed in a custom cloth folding case. Rare. Widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland, Scottish poet and lyricist Robert Burns is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is in a "light Scots dialect" of English, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He also wrote in standard English, and in these writings his political or civil commentary is often at its bluntest. He is regarded as a pioneer of the Romantic movement, and after his death he became a great source of inspiration to the founders of both liberalism and socialism, and a cultural icon in Scotland and among the Scottish diaspora around the world.
