Modelli, interferenze di genere, implicazioni teoriche) era nato dalla considerazione che, mentre per tutto il XVII secolo il poema eroico aveva continuato ad essere g…iudicato il genere più alto, il massimo cimento per ogni ingegno che aspirasse alla consacrazione poetica, l'ingente produzione epica del secolo era stata, salvo poche eccezioni, liquidata con giudizi frettolosi e sommari quando non completamente negletta dalla critica moderna. Si era certi che guardare con occhi non prevenuti quei testi, certo faticosi ed impervi, spesso inameni, avrebbe potute non poche sorprese ed avrebbe comunque dimostrato la val di un genere, tutt'altro che esausto nella ripetitività, ma ben e ricco di tensioni. Il titolo che si era dato al convegno e che il volume degli atti conserva, Dopo Tasso, intendeva naturalmente alludere agli Epigoni della Gerusalemme liberata, di Antonio Belloni, che, pubblicati nell'ormai lontano 1893, rimangono tuttora la più sistematica cognizione del genere; ma anche ne voleva suggerire la parzialità, proponendo un più duttile punto di vista che rimettesse in discussione la troppo facile riduzione degli esiti secenteschi a mero epigonismo tassiano. Come mostrano alcuni saggi qui raccolti il rapporto col modello è tutt'altro che lineare, mentre costante è la ricerca di novità (nella fabula, nell'intreccio, nella locuzione) anche nei poemi che appaiono, fin dal titolo e dall'argomento, di più stretta imitazione tassiana. Ci sembra che questi Atti possano essere accolti come primo moderno tentativo di indagine complessa dell'epica secentesca per campioni significativi (ma con importanti muove acquisizioni, come la Giuditta trionfante di Giacinto Brauchi, l'Adamo Tommaso Campailla o l'inedito Carlo quinto di Francesco Maria Santinelli) e anche per nodi tematici e per sottogeneri. Ne risulterà evidente la grande vitalità, la ricchezza di tensioni, di fermenti (anche eterodossi) e di originali invenzioni narrative. Che poi ampio spazio sia dedicato al poema sacro potrà apparire come una sorta di risarcimento nei confronti di un filone del genere epico-narrativo (anch'esso legato all'estrema esperienza poetica tassiana) tanto ricco e congruente con la cultura dominante del secolo, quanto precocemente e senza appello condannato all'oblio.
