Add to basketCondition: Very good. Beautifully bound set of the works of the French playwright, from the library of Frances Mary Richardson Currer, who was among the most celebrated book collectors of her era. This set was once owned by Yorkshire coal heiress Frances Mary Richardson Currer (1785-1861), who built a celebrated library of some 20,000 volumes. Contemporaries praised Currer's scholarship and taste, as well as the rigorous organization and "choice condition" of her books. The bibliographer Thomas Frognall Dibdin called her a "book-genius," and remarked of her library: "I may fairly and honestly say, that with the exception of Althorpe, Chatsworth, and Stowe, I know of NO such collection of books, situated in the country that can pretend to break a lance with it [.] The 'Collections' are nearly perfect." In 1820, and again in 1833, Currer issued a catalogue of her holdings, widely viewed as "the model catalogue of a private library" (DNB), and sent copies to book collectors across England and Europe, including members of the newly formed Roxburghe Club, quietly asserting her place among them. (This set is documented in the 1833 catalogue.) Also known for her commitment to charitable causes, Currer is obliquely noted as a "wealthy lady, in the West Riding of Yorkshire" who paid off the debts of a new widower, Patrick Brontë; scholars speculate that Charlotte Brontë's unusual pen name, Currer Bell, is a tribute to Frances Currer. A choice set once held by one of the great English book collectors of the Regency and early Victorian periods, when the field of book collecting as practiced in the UK and US today began to cohere. 5 octavo volumes, 8.25'' x 5'' each. Contemporary full blue calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt-tooled spines, red goatskin spine labels, triple-ruled gilt boards. All edges marbled, marbled endpapers. Text in French. clxxii, 297, [1]; 488; 486; 392; 310 pages. Engraved bookplate of Currer on front pastedown of each volume; ink gift inscription dated 1966 on fly leaf of each volume. Bindings with a bit of dryness and trace wear around joints; vol. I with ink stain at top joint of front board; some gatherings foxed, and a few areas of marginal staining or spotting. Joints firm. Gilt bright.…

Contact seller4-star sellerFIRST EDITION. 195 x 115 mm. (7 3/4 x 4 5/8"). Three volumes. Contemporary half calf over brown marbled boards, raised bands with gilt tooling, spine panels blind-stamped in a scolloped pattern, red morocco label, marbled endpapers and edges. Front pastedown with the bookplate of the celebrated book-collector Frances Mary Richardson Currer of Eshton Hall in each volume. Provenance: Dibdin, "Reminiscences of a Literary Life" (1836), pp. 94957; De Ricci, "English Collectors of Books and Manuscripts" (1930), pp. 141-43. Extremities a bit rubbed, boards lightly chafed, occasional minor marginal stains or light patches of foxing, but a pleasing copy, generally clean and fresh, in sturdy original bindings with no significant condition issues. This novel of the British navy during the Jacobite Rebellion comes from the library of a woman described by De Ricci as "England's earliest female bibliophile" and hailed by Dibdin as "the head of all female collectors in Europe." An only child, Frances Mary Richardson Currer (1785-1861) inherited considerable assets from both her father's and her mother's families: her relative Dorothy Richardson wrote in 1815, "She is in possession of both the Richardson and Currer estates and inherits all the taste of the former family, having collected a very large and valuable library, and also possessing a fine collection of prints, shells, and fossils, in addition to what were collected by her great grandfather and great-uncle." Dibdin noted that her library at Eshton Hall was "surpassed only by those of Earl Spencer, the duke of Devonshire, and the duke of Buckingham." According to DNB, "the library had substantial holdings in natural science, topography, antiquities, and history, together with a collection of the classics. There were rarities, some early printed books, a collection of Bibles, and a fine gathering of illustrated books. . . . Dibdin first estimated the number of volumes at 15,000 and, later, 18,000. In 1852, Sir J. B. Burke put the number at 20,000." Although best known for his Leatherstocking Tales set on the early American frontier, James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) had originally intended a career in the navy, and spent several years at sea before an inheritance from his father allowed him to pursue a literary career. Deemed by Day "an excellent naval novel," the text here is a poignant tale of conflicting loyalties and the importance of friendship, seen through the eyes of the titular "Two Admirals," lifelong friends supporting opposing political forces in the contest over the Stuart succession to throne of Britain.…

Add to basketCondition: Very Good. First Edition. London: Henry Colburn, 1828. First U.K. Edition. Two volumes; octavos (21.5cm.); full contemporary blind-ruled calf by J. Mackenzie, gilt spines in six compartments, red and green spine labels, all edges speckled red; xxiv,459,[1]; xi,[1],477,[1]pp. Leather a bit dried and scuffed at extremities, uneven dark spotting to spines, moderate foxing to early leaves, else a Very Good, internally quite fresh set of James Fenimore Cooper's travelogue first composed in 1830 while traveling through the United States. Provenance: Armorial ex libris of Frances Mary Richardson Currer to both front pastedowns. By the age of thirty Currer (1785-1861), the unmarried sole heir to both the Richardson and Currer estates, had amassed one of the most celebrated private libraries of her generation. She was considered the first as well as the greatest female bibliophile in Europe, with "a heart as big as St Paul's Dome and as warm as Volcanic lava" (Dawson Turner, cf. Oxford Dictionary of National Biography). As well as collecting in the areas of the natural sciences, topography, antiquities, history, classics, illustrated and early printed books, Currer was also an active and generous patron of many charities and public institutions, including the school at Cowan Bridge attended by the Brontë sisters. In fact their lives may have intersected more than once with the imminent bibliophile, who is believed to have paid off Patrick Brontë's debts when he was newly widowed. It has also been reasonably surmised that Charlotte Brontë borrowed the name for her pseudonym "Currer Bell." BAL 3841; HOWES C750; SABIN 16486.…

First edition in English of the works of Aristotle, one of 50 sets printed, and boldly signed by the translator Thomas Taylor in ink at the end of the first volume. All volumes bear the armorial bookplates of noted bibliophile and Bronte family benefactor Frances Mary Richardson Currer (1785-1861). Incomplete set, with eight of ten volumes present of the complete translation. Uniformly bound by "J. Mackenzie, Binder to the King" in contemporary half morocco over French Curl marbled boards with spines lettered and tooled in gilt; all edges gilt, 4to. The Great Edemian Ethics, 1811. 7. A Dissertation on the Philosophy of Aristotle, 1812.8. The Metaphysics (first edition of 1801). The first collected English translations of Aristotle's works from Orphic fragments by Neoplatonist scholar Thomas Tyler (1758-1835.) Provenance of famed bibliophile and collector Frances Mary Richardson Currer whose well-curated and respected library expanded to nearly 20,000 volumes. Bibliographer Thomas Frognall Dibdin remarked that she was, "the head of all female book collectors in Europe." Known for her philanthropic endeavors she donated a sum of 50 pounds to Patrick Bronte, father of Charlotte Bronte, when he was widowed in 1821. Currer also contributed an unknown amount to the Clergy Daughter's School that the Bronte sisters attended. Scholars postulate that Charlotte chose the non de plume of "Currer Bell" for her first published 1847 novel Jane Eyre in honor of Currer's philanthropy. A desirable set, even without Currer's bookplate, that seldom comes up for sale.…
