Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Thus. First thus - newly translated into English by Reginald Merton. ***Very good in red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and borders to the spine. The boards are quite clean but do show some marks and wear from handling over the last 98 years. The gilt titles are slightly faded. The head of the spine is rubbed and creased, with some fraying to the cloth and a small split at the top edge. Corners slightly creased but still sharp and not worn. The binding is square with no reading lean. Spine tight. The top edge of the page block is slightly dusty and darkened and there is a small light stain at the top of the fore-edge (not very noticeable). Light foxing also to the page block edges. Internally also very good, with just some light sporadic foxing and offsetting to the endpapers, and some light foxing spots to the first and last couple of pages. Interior pages otherwise clean, with no previous ownership inscriptions. The pages are generally clean, with no creases or tears. Paper stock lightly tanned but good quality paper used. No dustwrapper. ***225mm x 145mm. 247 pages. ***'Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov (15 Oct 1814 - 27 July 1841) was a Russian Romantic writer, poet and painter, sometimes called "the poet of the Caucasus", the most important Russian poet after Alexander Pushkin's death in 1837 and the greatest figure in Russian Romanticism. His influence on Russian literature is felt in modern times, through his poetry, but also his prose, which founded the tradition of the Russian psychological novel. "A Hero of Our Time" is a novel by Mikhail Lermontov, written in 1839, published in 1840, and revised in 1841. It is an example of the superfluous man novel, noted for its compelling Byronic hero (or antihero) Pechorin and for the beautiful descriptions of the Caucasus. This is the first psychological fiction in the history of Russian literature. There are several English translations, including one by Vladimir Nabokov and Dmitri Nabokov in 1958.' (Wiki) ***A very good copy of this new translation of "A Hero of Our Time" by Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov. Uncommon in this edition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
