Subject index. Over exploitation and degradation of natural resources is one of the major weaknesses that the present agriculture faces. The soil resource is also under increasing stress as there is a big gap (deficit of about 10 million tonnes NPK nutrients) between annual drain of nutrients from the soil due to crop removals and the nutrient inputs from the external sources. Integrated nutrient management (INM) has been recognized as the economically viable and environmentally benign technology to enhance soil productivity through the balanced use of mineral fertilizers combined with organic sources of plant nutrients. One of the major constraints of INM is the quantity and quality of organic manures available with the farmers. Even though significant quantities of organic manures are available with the farmers, their quality is poor. Lot of research has been done in ICAR Institutes as well as SAUs to enhance the quality of manures by efficient composting techniques, besides developing efficient techniques for nutrient enrichment in different organic manures including municipal solid wastes for efficient recycling of organic wastes for sustainable agriculture. This book contains very useful information on various on-farm and off-farm organic wastes being used for soil fertility management in INM and organic farming, nutrient enriched composts preparation, use of vermicomposting techniques for bio-degradation of organic wastes, conservation agriculture, and the effect of organic wastes on crop and soils quality, soil carbon dynamics. This publication will be quiet useful to researchers, students, extension persons, policy makers and all those engaged in developing efficient nutrient management strategies for sustainable agriculture. All India Coordinated Research Project for Dryland Agriculture (AICRPDA) Hyderabad was launched by Indian Council of Agricultural Research during 1970 with 23 Cooperative Centres Institute for Dryland Agriculture (CRIDA) during 1985. Another scheme All India Coordinated Research Project for Dryland Agriculture (on agrometeorology has been functioning at CRIDA for the past two decades. Research efforts went deep into real issues to tackle the problems of drylands in India which covers to the extent of 65 per cent of total cultivated area of 142.8 million hectares. The contribution to national food production has declined from 80 per cent in 1951 to <40 per cent at present. Generally the productivity is much higher in irrigated lands in addition to assured harvest of crop and income unlike in drylands which has been affected with vagaries of monsoon. Hence research efforts to sustain production and income to dryland farmers has been going in and at present there are different technologies available to farmers who has chance to choose any package/component of technology based on his needs choices socio economic agronomic conditions because technologies are highly location and categories of farmers specific which needs careful selection and adoption for higher income. Even government of Canada supported AICRPDA by sending experts and sanctioning the budget for construction of buildings in addition to supplying equipments machinery etc. and expert's advice in research issues/projects. The experts of Canada were in AICRPDA/CRIDA during 1970 85. This period was divided into three phases viz. first phase (1970 75) second phase (1976 80) and third phase (1981 85). In first phase research projects covered identification of crops and varieties cropping systems (inter/sequence crops) soil and tillage and crop establishment practises fertilizer use weed control aspects etc. In second phase the joint collaboration of Indo Canada Project covered location specific integrated activities cropping systems pulses oilseeds cereals millets full utilization of agronomic practises fertilizer placement etc. whereas in third phase research on rainwater management (in situ and ex situ) appropriate cropping systems integrated nutrient management fertilizer use efficiency management of natural resources etc were covered. The Canadian experts lefts CRIDA later. CRIDA with 23 centres carried out research programmes on alternate land use systems refinement cropping systems etc. based on understanding the environment and socio economic agronomic conditions watershed management under different agro eco regions during 1986 90. Subsequently all efforts were put on sustainable agriculture resource characterization soil fertility and nutrient/energy management mechanization watershed development programme for sustainable crop production and income generation transfer of technologies evaluation of technologies etc. Hence it is felt that there is a need to write a book based on results at CRIDA AICRPDA centers (22) and AICRPAM centers (25) and experiences of authors who discussed with a number of scientists individually and on different forums. Thus it is an outcome of the experiences of authors in dryland agriculture research during the past 3 decades. 368 pp.

Somani, F.M. Qureshi, U.S. Rawat and S.L. Mundra. Subject Index. The continuous use of high levels of chemical fertilizers is adversely affecting the sustainability of agricultural production and causing environmental pollution. There is a decline in the productivity of crops, despite the application of optimum levels of fertilizer inputs under assured irrigation. Constraint analysing has identified the declining organic mater status as a probable reason. It is in this context that the supplementation of organic along with chemical fertilizers is a decisive viable strategy. In coming decades a major issue in designing sustainable agriculture system will be the management of soil organic matter and the rational use of inorganic inputs along with animal manures, crop residues, green manures, sewage sludge and food industry wastes. However, since organic wastes cannot meet the total nutrient needs of modern agriculture, integrated use of nutrients from fertilizers and organic wastes seems to be a need of the time. Sustainable plant nutrition to increase food production has been identified as one of the priorities directly linked to land and water management resources in relation to environment. Therefore, the soil health is very important to achieve national food security targets for sustainable growth. Indian agriculture is operating at a net negative balance of plant nutrients at the rate of 8-10 million tonnes/annum. At least 10 million tonnes nutrients should come from organic manures crop residues and bio-degradable wastes. Thus, food security is very much linked with nutrient input. India is endowed with enormous potential for plant nutrients locked up in the bio-degradable wastes. A total quantity of around 875 million tones of these so-called waste material is available in the country, which can supply 18.45 million tones of nutrients annually. This book orients towards recycling of biodegradable organic wastes for improved soil productivity. (jacket).
