Book
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. From the cover blurb :: "The art of one's own time is the most difficult to interpret. Sir Herbert Read, perhaps the most influential interpreter of modern art, combined a lifelong involvement n contemporary art with a breadth of historical perspective that few have tried to emulate.Since its publication in 1959, "A Concise History of Modern Painting" remains the best introduction to the subject ever written. Taking Cezanne as his starting point, he sets out to trace the development of the visual experience involved in painting and to show how it has been related to the general movement of thought and sensibility during the twentieth century. His account of this evolution is in terms of the initial artistic impulses, Cubism, Futurism, Surrealism, and Dada; the great pioneers, Picasso, Kandinsky, and Klee; and the emergent principles of 'determined relations' (as in Constructivism) and 'internal necessity' (as in Abstract Expressionism). ***************************************** "For this new edition, the developments of the 1960s and the early 1970s, in their logical, and occasionally illogical relation to the previous developments in the art of the century, are discussed in a chapter by Caroline Tisdall and William Feaver that both complements Read's insights and points toward the art of the future." ************************************* TITLE : A Concise History of Modern Painting AUTHOR : Herbert Read CONCLUDING CHAPTER : Caroline Tisdall & William Feaver PREFACE : Benedict Read IMPRINT : Oxford University Press PLACE : New York and Toronto DATE : (1974) EDITION : New, Enlarged updated Edition (3rd Edition) PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade Paperback; numerous illustrations in line and color; contains a bibliography and an index; 396 pages; approximately 5 3/4" x 8 1/4"; pictorial wraps, perfect bound (illustrated paper covers, glued) ********************************** CONDITION - VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned book that has obviously been read, but which remains clean and serviceable, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR -- Mild surface rub - slight abrasion with small loss of surface at bottom front fore-edge corner tip ; a bit of surface creasing; light wear to text block edges (some smudging, a tiny ink spot to bottom edge) - else clean and presentable. / BINDING -- Solid / INTERIOR - - Clean and presentable.
