From the preface The enigmatic silent and complex biochemical interactions among plants including microbes generally go unnoticed in nature but lead to changes in vegetation structure composition and species diversity. Such biochemical interactions termed as allelopathy have emerged as a full fledged scientific discipline falling within the framework of chemical ecology. Allelochemicals are produced in plants as defensive compounds and upon release influence the growth and development of biological systems in different ecosystems. Allelopathy is now viewed with multifaceted approach and is recognized as a key factor in vegetation patterning succession forest regeneration and influencing growth and yield of other plants. In agroecosystems the influence of allelopathy on crop plants was probably realized from the beginning of the civilization when agriculture began. Generally it is viewed as a causal factor in decreasing yield of crop plants. Accumulation of allelochemicals in the fields causes soil sickness and thereby the growth and yield of crop plants particularly when the same crop is grown continuously in monocultures. The problem of soil sickness is attributed to autotoxicity (autoallelopathy). During the last few years this science has attracted the attention of scientists world over because of the pesticidal potential of allelochemicals. Allelopathic interactions in agricultural fields also influence soil microbial ecology nutrient dynamics and various biotic and abiotic factors. 448 pp.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. This book provides a collection of contemporary researches focused on the challenges, impacts and precautionary measures to be taken to address invasive alien plant species in urban systems. The current scenario of rapid urbanization and anthropogenic disturbances across the globe are supple…mental to the expansion of invasive alien plant species. Urban ecosystems are strangely under-explored in the constantly developing understanding of alien species invasions. In this book, topics related to alien plant species occurrence in urban ecosystems, their ecosystem services and disservices, their comparative assessment to native species, challenges to the urban ecosystems under changing climatic scenarios, the impact of alien plants on different components of urban environment/ecosystems, aesthetic values, livelihoods and health of urban dwellers, management approaches and policies related to alien plants in urban systems are highlighted. The book will be helpful in understanding the invasion process in urban centres as human-affected landscapes in urban areas are expected to support a larger chunk of alien species, and are instrumental in the dissemination of invasive propagules to nearby natural landscapes. Invasive alien plant species are reported as a serious threat to native biodiversity and human health. It is predicted that climate change associated disturbances or extreme events may play supportive role in colonization and spread of invasive alien plants in urban ecosystems. This book will be suitable for students (undergraduate and postgraduates) of urban planning and architecture, urban agriculture, urban forestry, urban ecology, and environmental sciences; teachers, researchers, climate change scientists in academic and research institutions. It will also be applicable to town planning and environmental management agencies, government agencies and policy makers. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardback. Condition: New. Invasive alien species are a major threat to biodiversity and ecosystems throughout the world. In India, a country with four of the world's most important 'biodiversity hotspots', the invasion of alien plants means risking a national ecological disaster with major social and economic consequences. Curre…ntly, there is insufficient information about invasive alien plants; their distribution, rate of spread and adaptability to new environments. This book reveals existing and potential invaders, evaluates the level of risk they pose to native species and suggests steps to manage spread and limit damage. Invaluable to policy-makers, this book is also required reading for researchers of invasive plants worldwide.
