Richard Lalor Sheil (1791 â" 1851), Irish politician, writer and orator, was born at Drumdowney, Slieverue, County Kilkenny, Ir…eland. He was admitted a student of Lincoln's Inn, and was called to the Irish bar in 1814. His play of Adelaide, or the Emigrants, was performed at the Crow Street Theatre, Dublin in 1814 and in 1816 performed at Covent Garden. His next play The Apostate was produced at Covent Garden in 1817, firmly establishing his reputation as a dramatist. In 1822 he began to contribute to the New Monthly Magazine a series of papers entitled Sketches of the Irish Bar. These essays are gathered and presented here in two volumes edited by R. Shelton Mackenzie. From a contemporary review: "We cordially recommend these sketches as interesting in matter and brilliant in composition. Their literary merit is very great. The sketches of the Irish Bar paint the characters of the leading persons in Irish politics with graphic fidelity. The revelations of the Jesuits are remarkable." [Atheneum].

Published in two volumes, "With Memoir and Notes by R. Shelton Mackenzie, D.C.L…." This is Volume Two only, a Very Good (Minus) copy of the First Edition (Third Thousand). Green publisher's cloth binding, ruled and with gilt lettering. Mild bumps and a slight lean. The major defect is chipping on the spine, which has taken away what may have been an Irish harp design. Clean text, bright and clear; 380 pages, indexed. This copy has been INSCRIBED by Mackenzie (1809-1880), author of "Bits of Blarney." Mackenzie's book apparently precedes an English edition published a year later. In an archival plastic protector, Inscribed By Editor. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
