Written on the inside of the back cover: "Hartsville Pa left at Barley Sheaf." The text indicates that Matthew Grier was 13 years old when he died and left behind a brother and sisters. Before his death, he bid farewill to his parents, siblings, and even "the negroe wench," as well as addressing the neighbors who were there. Mearns delivers lessons to the children and youth of Neshaminy and to their parents about the wisdom of being prepared for death. He also suggests that Matthew was not the first of the Grier children to die, saying to the parents: "God seems to be taking away your Children in Succession." In Very Good Condition: wrapper is slightly stained and starting to separate from the tail of the spine; pages are slightly soiled but solid.…
