Shoemaker 15391 [American Imprints 1820-1829] . A nice example of an early Georgetown imprint in a contemporary binding (probably bound at Milligan's as well). Joseph Milligan was Thomas Jefferson's longtime Georgetown bookseller. When Congress agreed to purchase Jeffersonâs library, Milligan went to Jeffersonâs Monticello home to inventory and appraise the collection. He also supervised its packing and transportation to Washington. When the transfer of Jefferson's book collection to Washington D.C. was completed in July 1815, Jefferson was already working with Milligan to rebuild a new library, his âretirement library.'.

Hardcover. Folio. Rebound in quarter brown cloth and marbled paper over boards. (71pp). Ornate-bordered frontispiece and entire text bearing same border, with title, running heads, dedication and colophon in orange and initial capitals in blue. Near fine. Handsome copy of this lush text, for which 300 copies were printed. William H. Wilke's striking full-length portrait of David in full regalia and his large intertwined borders lend this volume its distinct illuminated medieval manuscript feel, and its tight Gothic text obliges Nash to note in his dedication that "it will doubtless be said by critics that it is hard to read" and to admit, "I agree: the book has been done with the hope that it will prove to be a typographical picture." He dedicates it to "his friends, and notably for his Jewish friends of San Francisco. the men and women of San Francisco who proudly claim racial connection with the royal singer of Israel. Our city acclaims them for their distinguished patronage of music, arts and letters, no less than for their charitable and philanthropic generosity." In the rear colophon he notes creating it "for the joy of doing" and that it was done "over a period of ten years." Nash has signed the front pastedown large and bold in pencil. "O'DAY 62-63.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1790 MUSIC Psalms of David Tate & Brady Bible Hymns Church of England Choir A rare, 18th-century printing of the Psalms of David set to music. This 1790 printing includes the Psalms but also numerous other hymns commonly sung in churches in the Church of England. Nahum Tate and Nicholas Brady together produced only this one famous work. It was a metrical version of the Psalms, which, shortly after its premier in 1696, ousted the older version of the metrical Psalms by Sternhold and Hopkins. This book is often just referred to as 'Tate and Brady.' This particular edition was published in London by Millar and includes two, three, and four part hymns. His biblical translations were extremely important and popular throughout Europe, especially among Calvinists. They helped shape many theological scholars who came after him. In 1544, John Calvin asked Beza to complete a collection of the Psalms of David, metered, and translated into French. Each Psalm in this 1728 printing of the 'Pseaumes de David' is set to music in the form of chant and features the French texts of both Beza and 16th-century Renaissance poet Clement Marot. No Binding. Condition: Poor. See photos for condition details. This original binding is missing both boards and at least half of the spine. The first end page has a hand drawn color calligraphic title along with additional handwriting which is difficult to read. This edition was first published in 1744 by Christopher Sauer (Senior),and then this edition was printed by his son: Christopher Sauer II, and contained 575 hymns, of which 28 were added to the original. In 1743, Sauer (Senior) published the first German-language Bible to be printed in North America (the first in any European language). The main book of 570 pages are darkened due to age but are, for the most part, in good condition. The damaged portions as seen in the images is the index in the back of "Melodien Register", where the pages are mostly there but are folded up and torn in the lower outside corner. The last remaining pages, which are heavily damaged in the same area has a title page reading "Ein Besang". No attempt has been made to unfold these crimps because it may damage the paper itself, but the last couple pages are incomplete. No other handwriting was found in the book other than that on the first page. A couple pages in the main body have minor corner folds. The last few pages are in English, the rest of the book is in German.
