North was born in 1830 to an artistic and prosperous family. After the death of her father when she was 39 (her mother had died years earlier), she began a series of journeys around the world for the purpose of painting flora and fauna. In 1879 her offer to fund the construction of a gallery to house her collection was accepted enthusiastically by the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. North died in 1890. 0030574536 Very good in dj.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Unstated edition w/no additional printings listed, hardcover in decorated brown cloth, the binding is badly cracked at the title page with lighter cracks throughout, but continues to hold. The book also has bumps with splitting and losses to the spine ends and corners, sunning with white speckling to the spine, rubbing with smudges and a touch of speckling to the covers, wear to the edges of the covers and some pages, smudging to the endsheets, and a previous owner's name inked to the title page with a couple sparse pencil marks to the text. Overall, this is a solid, but Fair only copy.
