paperback. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. I knew nothing of those who had passed before me. There was one who could have known, who could have conjured their faces and voices through an act of will and invention, but the river took him before I could ask his name, before I could ask him how his mother had died, or if he remembered her at all. 'In the title story, a young, out-of-work Nepali man meets a circus clown and a giant in a park in Santa Rosa, California and in their strange predicaments finds unexpected resonances of the lives of fellow Nepali immigrants. 'Fortune' tells the story of an old man who watches his village transform into a teeming basti of migrants brought there to dam the Marshyangdi River and finds himself thrown into a struggle against oblivion. In 'The Boy from Banauti', the river joins for one afternoon the divergent fates of two young boys playing truant and inventing stories. And in 'The Messiah', a wounded man remembers a martyr and worries about their place in his nation's turbulent history.Set in the obscure village of Khaireni in central Nepal, in Kathmandu and in California, the stories in The Vanishing Act carry a compelling sense of place and are illuminated by flashes of astonishing insight. This collection marks one of the most assured literary debuts. A collection of stories set in Nepal and California, exploring themes of migration, memory, and identity. Soft cover. Condition: New. In 1960, King Mahendra Shah summoned a twenty-four-year-old Nepali PhD student in California to serve as the Member Secretary of National Planning Council. In the extraordinary six-decade long career that followed, Bhekh Bahadur Thapa witnessed first-hand the enormous challenges, as well as the heartbreaks and triumphs, of nation-building in Nepal. He revisits those times, offering deeply personal observations into the transformation of his country, from a feudal protectorate under the rule of the Rana dynasty to its current-day manifestation as a boisterous federal democratic republic. An 'insider-account' in the truest sense, A Life in Public Service is a fascinating, intimate look at the modern-day governance of South Asia's oldest nation.…
