Manuscript / Paper Collectible
See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The present item is not in the best of condition: it is aged and creased (including dog-eared corner on which the signature 'Camden' is written), with contemporary repair to two long tears by the laying down on the blank reverse of strips from a contemporary manuscript. Docketed on the otherwise blank second leaf: '25th July 1824 / Marquis Camden'. Writing from the town house of the Marquis of Londonderry to an unnamed recipient, regarding William Pitt the Younger's country house: 'You were so kind, when I had the pleasure of meeting you, at Lord Londonderry, to offer to send me a sketch which had been made, of Holwood[.] I was much obliged to you for the Intention, you expressed & I beg to remind you of it, as it may have escaped your Recollection. I beg you to believe me / Yours most sincerely / Camden'.

Hastings, 5 March 1833. "Lady Georgiana has taken to Drawing again, which I am very glad to see." John Jeffreys Pratt, 1st Marquess Camden (1759 1840), known as The Earl Camden from 1794 to 1812, was a British politician. He served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland between 1795 and 1798 and as Secretary of State for War and the Colonies between 1804 and 1805. Disliked in Ireland as an opponent of Roman Catholic emancipation and as the exponent of an unpopular policy, Camden's term of office was one of turbulence, culminating in the rebellion of 1798: his refusal to reprieve the United Irishman William Orr, convicted of treason on the word of one witness of dubious credit, aroused great public indignation.
