Add to basketDie Schnee-Eule ist ein Charaktertier der Arktis. Sie gehört zu den Weiten der hochnordischen Ebenen wie Polarfuchs und Eisbär. Ein schmaler Saum an den Küsten Nordeuropas, Asiens, Nordamerikas und Grönlands ist ihr Brutgebiet. Hier zieht sie ihre Jungen auf und jagt den Lemming, ihr bevorzugtes Beutetier. Im Winterhalbjahr komm…t es zu weiten Wanderungen der Vögel, wenn der Schnee in der Arktis zu hoch liegt und die Nahrung nur schwer zu erreichen ist. Ob der Vogel regelrechte Zugwege einhält, ist noch nicht erwiesen. Es hat den Anschein, daß die Schnee-Eule auf der Suche nach Nahrung umherstreicht. In manchen Jahren kommt es zu Invasionen, die Tausende Vögel weit nach Süden führt. Besonders eindrucksvoll sind die Einflüge in die Oststaaten Nordamerikas. Jahrzehnte seines Lebens widmete der Verfasser dem Studium der Schnee-Eule. Er beobachtete sie auf Reisen nach Nowaja Semlja und Taimyr, am Anadyr und auf der Tschuktschen-Halbinsel, besonders aber auf der Wrangel-Insel. Umfangreiche Literatur wurde vom Verfasser kritisch ausgewertet und mit eigenen Untersuchungen verglichen. Dazu kamen Umfragen in Jagdzeitschriften, die viele Beobachtungen von Jägern aus allen Teilen Eurasiens erbrachten. So entstand eine fundamentale wissenschaftliche Monographie, die an Vollständigkeit nichts zu wünschen übrigläßt. 232 pp., 61 b/w figs, br. 8 [like new].
