This is the fascinating autobiography of Opritsa Dragalina-Popa (b. 1942) who was born in Bucharest, Romania to Virgil Alexandru Dragalina, a Navy commander and adjutant to the Royal Prince of Romania, and Virginia Dragalina, a professor. Dragalina-Popa grew up during the oppressive years of Soviet occupation and Communist dictatorship in Romania but later found refuge when she and her husband, Valentin Popa, immigrated to the United States in 1968. There, she earned Master's degrees in German and Library Science and became an Academic Librarian at the University of California, Davis and an author. In her memoir, Dragalina-Popa vividly describes her life in both Romania and the U.S. and the lives her family members and ancestors. She writes about the heroism of her grandfather, General Ioan Dragalina, who fought in World War I and lost his life on the battlefield; the life of her uncle, General Corneliu Dragalina, who fought in Stalingrad during World War II and helped save the lives of 14,000 Jews in Bukovina; and the life of her father, Virgil Alexandru Dragalina, who fought against the Russians on the Danube in 1916 and endured the terrors of the Communist regime in Romania. Of her own life, Dragalina-Popa recounts the trials and tribulations of her youth in Romania and her later years of joy and success in the U.S.

Condition: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | D. R. Popa's novel "Sabrina and Other Good Suspicions" is a thriller and a love story, together with incredible transoceanic happenings. Part of it is placed in the United States, while another part takes place in Romania after the 1989 Revolution. The author is a political refugee who brings a perspective full of doubts, suspicion, and uncertainty about the real democratization of his old country. Popa places his characters and actions in a world of fantastic and ironic threads, like in many other of his writings (see "Lady V. and Other Stories". New York: Spuyten Duyvil, 2007). For example, the mythical Securitate (Romanian KGB, officially abolished after the controversial Revolution, is still present, over there as well as over here. Two Securitate officers are sent to recuperate money belonging to the organization in the U.S. where a traitor disappeared with the dough . in the dream of another fellow! The action continues with a couple of old Americans taking, apparently, a peaceful vacation and reading "Sabrina and Other Good Suspicions", the book, which is in perpetual making. This is a good opportunity for the author to give a sample of the way Romania and Romanians are perceived in the Middle America. The very modern literary technique blends together elements of social observation with obsessions about the old country; but everything in the end, including the strange love story between an American young woman and a displaced Romanian man, remains under the spell of suspicion.
