Of Love and War: The Letters and Diaries of Captain Adrian Curlewis and His Family 1939-1945 is a compelling biographical military history book compiled by Philippa Poole and first published in 1982 by Lansdowne Press. Sir Adrian Curlewis was a prominent Australian barrister, sportsman, and later a District Court judge. Notably, he was the son of famous Australian children's author Ethel Turner, who wrote Seven Little Australians. The Conflict: Curlewis enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) during World War II. Following the fall of Singapore in February 1942, he became a Prisoner of War (POW) under the Japanese military. The Captivity: He spent nearly three and a half years in captivity, experiencing the harsh conditions of Changi Gaol and being forced into slave labour on the notorious Burma-Thailand Railway. The Structure: The book seamlessly weaves together two distinct perspectives to showcase the emotional toll of global conflict. It juxtaposes Curlewis's secretly kept wartime diaries with the anxious correspondence from his family—including his wife Betty and his mother—who waited 18 months just to learn if he was still alive.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Very slight bumping of edges. Faint scratches on covers due to shelf wear. In this collection her granddaughter, Philippa Poole has selected the most interesting passages from the author's diaries, spanning her literary career from 1889 to 1930. Ethel Turner emerges from these perso…nal writings as a talented and determined author. Candid and imaginative, her diaries create an exciting picture of her life in turn-of-the-century Sydney, and the social whirl of garden parties and balls at Government House. After her marriage in 1896, she writes about her two children and, as always, her books. Philippa Poole, through her perceptive commentary on the diary entries, gives illuminating side lines to Ethel turner's at time audacious, and brilliant career.
