Blue cloth; spine head chipped and frayed with lesser wear at heel; some slender wear and loss at board corners; spine's gilt lettering dulled but legible with front board's gilt stamped lettering still bright. Strong toning to edges with interior text leaves affected likewise but with toning diminishing inward from margins (paper stock utilized by printer affected by "economy standards," i.e. wartime-period rationing regulation). Light toning to endpapers; novelist Nancy Hallinan's name handwritten in green ink at top of front free endpaper recto with additional notation in the same green ink handwriting "from Hal Christmas-1945" at bottom of page. "Hal" Hallinan (1880-1971), novelist Nancy Hallinan (1921-2014) authored the critically acclaimed novels "Rough Winds of May" (1955), "A Voice from the Wings" (1965), and "Night Swimmers" (1976) as well as the 1980 O'Henry award winning short story "Women in a Roman Courtyard." Her papers are held by Boston University's Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center.
