About this Item

Description:

British first edition. 176 pages. Hardcover: H 21.75cm x L 14.25cm. No dust jacket (i.e. lacking). Blue cloth; spine head chipped and frayed with lesser wear at heel; some slender wear and loss at board corners; spine's gilt lettering dulled but legible with front board's gilt stamped lettering still bright. Strong toning to edges with interior text leaves affected likewise but with toning diminishing inward from margins (paper stock utilized by printer affected by "economy standards," i.e. wartime-period rationing regulation). Light toning to endpapers; novelist Nancy Hallinan's name handwritten in green ink at top of front free endpaper recto with additional notation in the same green ink handwriting "from Hal Christmas-1945" at bottom of page. Interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. A good copy. Features a collection of essays, commentary, poems, etc.: "In Daylight - I" and "Elegy" by John Lehmann, "The Two Loves" and "Some Notes on 'King Lear'" by Edith Sitwell, "Lament" by George Barker, "Island Dances" by George Seferis, "I Hear You Say So" by Elizabeth Bowen, "Five Poems" by Terence Tiller, "No News From Home" by Cecil Keeling, "The Woman Who Was Loved" by James Stern, "The Poems" by Peter Yates, "Two Poems" by Odysseus Elytis, "The Man Who Killed" by Jiri Weiss, "War" by Andre Chamson, "The Hidden Force" by William Plomer, "The Pre-Raphaelite Literary Painters" by Stephen Spender, "W.H. Auden in America" and "The Place and the Person" by Henry Reed, plus other contributions by Heinrich Fischer, Hero Pesopoulos, Demetrios Capetanakis, Alexander Astruc, J. MacLaren-Ross, C.H. Peacock, J.P. Hodin, and Percy Coates. The eldest daughter of Charles T. "Hal" Hallinan (1880-1971), novelist Nancy Hallinan (1921-2014) authored the critically acclaimed novels "Rough Winds of May" (1955), "A Voice from the Wings" (1965), and "Night Swimmers" (1976) as well as the 1980 O'Henry award winning short story "Women in a Roman Courtyard."
