The story of Sam Hughes, who was the Canadian Minister of Militia and Defense and a last Liberal-Conservative member of Parliament. He was born in Solina, Ontario and went on to teaching and publishing in Lindsay. He is credited with starting the first distinct Canadian army within the British Empire. Hughes was a controversial figure, accused of much ineptitude in his professional activities. It appears that this biography takes a sympathetic view towards him, being able to place his accomplishments in context, with the benefit of fifty years hindsight. This is a scarce copy.

Internally in excellent shape, with only some minor discolouration from age. Part of the Gazette Canadiana Series, this text is an historical account…of the mascots of the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment, affectionately known as the Hasty Ps, local to Hastings and Prince Edward counties. The account begins with the adoption of the first mascot during the beginning of the Second World War through to 1976. Included is a short timeline of the regiment. Alan Roy Capon (1932-2014) was born in England and came to Canada in the 1950s. Having worked as a copywriter, he went on to work as an editor for a number of different newspapers. After founding the Minden Times, he became editor of the Lindsay Daily Post until 1970. From that point he was editor for the Kingston Whig-Standard and the Picton Gazette. In addition to his journalistic career, Capon was a prolific author of books of local interest, particularly various histories of Prince Edward County and environs.
