The work is essentially technical in its approach and was written as an update to a previous pamphlet on the subject the work stimulated by the recognition of the comparatively rapid but also somewhat hapharzard deterioraton of modern leather book bindings compared with those of earlier periods. The author worked in the BM Research Laboratory and draws on his practical experience and study to show what effects different approaches and events have on the durability of leather bindings, useful information for both private and public owners.
