Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. This book is "An American Utilitarian : Richard Hildreth as a Philosopher, with Selections from his Published and Unpublished Works" by Martha M. Pingel. It is the 1948 First Edition hardcover published by Columbia University Press a No. 20 in their series, "Columbia Studies in American Culture". The book has a frontispiece portrait and a couple of illustrations in the text. The book is Out of Print - OP From the dust-jacket blurb : "Richard Hildreth (1807 - 1864) is one of the forgotten men of American letters. Well-known in his own time as an editor and as author of the popular Abolitionist novel, 'The White Slave', he retreated into obscurity after the violent attacks on his book of philosophy, 'Theory of Morals'. It is with his philosophy that this book is essentially occupied. 'Theory of Morals' was only the first volume out of a projected four. Although he completed 'Theory of Taste' and 'Theory of Wealth', he was so discouraged with the reception of the first volume that they have remained unpublished until their inclusion in sections of this book. Six of the polemics which established his reputation as an editor are also included. "Hildreth's philosophy is in part derived from Jeremy Bentham's, but it is particularly American, and particularly his own. He considerably modified Bentham's theory of utility. His aim was to apply the inductive method of science to the problems of moral philosophy. He concluded that practical affairs, being mundane, belong to the realm of reason, and that religion, being a matter of faith, should confine itself to the supernatural. For this he was called an 'atheist', a condemnation which fell so far short of understanding his thought that he abandoned the attempt to communicate with his contemporaries."
