Ricostruire il contesto cronologico e territoriale di un'opera d'arte, e apprezzarne appieno il significato, può dunque voler dire decifrare codici divenuti per noi incomprensibili. Compito dello storico dell'arte è attivare tutti i canali conoscitivi - documentari, storico-filologici, iconologici, di analisi del contesto e della committenza, di storia del gusto e della fortuna critica per approssimarsi il più possibile all'interpretazione autentica dell'opera. Questo libro, che si avvale di una sezione iconografica, si propone di far acquisire al lettore uno sguardo critico e metodologicamente aggiornato sulla storia dell'arte, collocando le opere sullo sfondo di questioni più ampie, quali il ruolo sociale dell'artista nelle diverse epoche - misurato anche sulla base del valore attribuito all'opera in termini di prezzo - o il significato e i limiti delle cosiddette "etichette storico-critiche", come Gotico, Manierismo, Barocco o Rococò.
