Paperback. Condition: New. From a trailblazing poet, a trilingual narrative in verse that bears witness to a devastating crime and testifies to the power of collective defianceLonglisted for the 2026 Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize In 2007, Mexican soldiers raped and left for dead a seventy-three-year-old Indigenous Nahua woman, Ernestina Ascencio Rosario, as she worked in her cornfield. The courts ruled that Ascencio died of natural causes. When journalists investigated, they discovered numerous village girls, as young as twelve, who also had been raped by soldiers. The reports sparked outrage throughout Latin America over gender-based violence, oppression of Indigenous communities, and military impunity. Stolen Flower is Irma Pineda's powerful sequence of poems memorializing these events and their ramifications. The poems, which appear here in the original Didxazá (Isthmus Zapotec), Spanish, and English, are a chorus of fictionalized voices: Ascencio herself, the land, and the community grapple with the terror. It is a lament and a call to action, refashioning the testimonio into a tribute to Mexico's Indigenous peoples and their lands, cultures, and languages.…

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. From a trailblazing poet, a trilingual narrative in verse that bears witness to a devastating crime and testifies to the power of collective defiance In 2007, Mexican soldiers raped and left for dead a seventy-three-year-old Indigenous Nahua woman, Ernestina Ascencio Rosario, as she worked on her farm. Despite extensive evidence to the contrary, including eyewitness accounts, the courts ruled that Ascencio had died of natural causes. When journalists began to investigate, they discovered that there were numerous girls in the community who also had been raped by soldiersgirls as young as twelve who were already mothers. The reports sparked outrage throughout Latin America over violence against women and girls, violence against Indigenous communities, and military impunity. Stolen Flower, a contemporary classic originally written in Didxaza (Isthmus Zapotec), is Irma Pineda's powerful sequence of poems memorializing the events and their ramifications. The poems, which appear here in Didxaza, Spanish, and English, are told through a chorus of fictionalized voices: of Ascencio herself, of the field where the rape occurred, of the forest that has seen generations of Indigenous villagers, of the village grappling with the terror. It is at once a lament and a call to arms, refashioning the testimonio into a tribute to Mexico's Indigenous peoples and their lands, cultures, languages, and dignity. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A story of separation and displacement in two fictionalized voices: a person who has migrated, without papers, to the United States for work, and their partner who waits at home.Nostalgia Doesn't Flow Away Like Riverwater / Xilase qui rie di' sicasi rie nisa guiigu' / La Nostalgia no se marcha como el agua de los ros is a trilingual collection by one of the most prominent Indigenous poets in Latin America: Irma Pineda. The book consists of 36 persona poems that tell a story of separation and displacement in two fictionalized voices: a person who has migrated, without papers, to the United States for work, and that person's partner who waits at home, in the poet's hometown of Juchitn, Oaxaca. According to Peridico de Poesa, a journal based at UNAM (Mexico's national university), when it was published in 2007, this book established Pineda "one of the strongest poets working in Zapotec, the [Mexican] Native language with the largest literary production." Originally published under title Xilase qui riae di' sicasi riae nisa guiigu' / La nostalgia no se marcha como el agua de los raios in 2007 by Escritores en Lenguas Indaigenas.
