In un antico testo si legge che il magistrato incaricato della sovrintendenza alle prati…che divinatorie aveva, tra le sue attribuzioni, il controllo delle regole fissate in tre libri chiamati Dei Mutamenti. Mentre dei primi due di tali libri non è rimasta traccia, il terzo, intitolato Zhou Yi (Mutamenti del moto circolare) è giunto fino a noi come Il Libro dei Mutamenti o I:Ching. L'I:Ching è un'opera divinatoria, perché questa è la sua stesura, in questo modo lo si consulta e in questo senso è spiegata e commentata. Ma, considerato nella sua totalità, l'I:Ching è un testo indispensabile per tutti coloro i quali desiderano conoscere il pensiero cinese. Il testo pervenuto fino ad oggi è evidentemente opera di diversi autori. Il suo nucleo originale è costituito da una serie di 64 esagrammi disegnati con tratti continui e tratti spezzati. Secondo la tradizione, Fuxi, levando lo sguardo verso il Cielo, poi abbassandolo sulla Terra e osservandone i particolari, seguendo il volo degli uccelli e vedendo i raccolti, esaminando le caratteristiche del corpo umano e quelle degli esseri e delle realtà visibili, incominciò a tracciare otto gua, o trigrammi, composti da linee intere e spezzate. In seguito, accoppiando questi otto gua semplici, formò i 64 esagrammi che rappresentano la trama dell'I:Ching. Wenwang redasse successivamente, per ciascuno dei 64 esagrammi, una generica sentenza sapienziale, poi arricchita di una formula per ogni linea di ciascun esagramma da suo figlio Zhougong. Più tardi, Confucio, nel V secolo a.C., riprendendo la loro opera, compose vari commenti particolareggiati. Per i cinesi, la tradizione orale della sapienza dell'I:Ching non si è mai interrotta: maestri e discepoli ne continuano lo studio, da Confucio ai filosofi della rinascenza letteraria e fino ai nostri giorni. La presente opera è la prima traduzione integrale dal cinese in francese dell'I:Ching. Opera monumentale e completa, è la più ampia e documentata comparsa nel mondo occidentale e consente una lettura veramente unica dell'I:Ching dal punto di vista letterario, filosofico e divinatorio. The author, a colonial administrator, diplomat and scholar, served in French Indochina for 16 years in the second half of the 19th century. While derived from the penal code of dynastic China, the author notes that the Annamite Code was administered absolutely as it was written and, unlike the situation in China itself, no further commentary, discussion or legislative modification was ever permitted. The work consists of a complete translation of the Code, covering all aspects of personal, civil, economic and state-related crime and punishment, with the author's notes on the origins of each statute and comparison with any Chinese counterpart.
