In un antico testo si legge che il magistrato incaricato della sovrintendenza alle pratiche divinatorie aveva, tra le sue attribuzioni, il controllo delle regole fissate in tre libri chiamati Dei Mutamenti. Mentre dei primi due di tali libri non è rimasta traccia, il terzo, intitolato Zhou Yi (Mutamenti del moto circolare) è giunto fino a noi come Il Libro dei Mutamenti o I:Ching. L'I:Ching è un'opera divinatoria, perché questa è la sua stesura, in questo modo lo si consulta e in questo senso è spiegata e commentata. Ma, considerato nella sua totalità, l'I:Ching è un testo indispensabile per tutti coloro i quali desiderano conoscere il pensiero cinese. Il testo pervenuto fino ad oggi è evidentemente opera di diversi autori. Il suo nucleo originale è costituito da una serie di 64 esagrammi disegnati con tratti continui e tratti spezzati.
