Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Peter Rindlisbacher (Jacket Illustration) (illustrator). xi, [1], 739, [1] pages. Illustrated endpapers. Illustrations. Source Notes. Index. Michael Richard Beschloss (born November 30, 1955) is an American historian specializing in the United States presidency. He is the author of nine books, the most recent of which, Presidents of War, was published by Crown/Penguin Random House in 2018. Beschloss has been a frequent commentator on the PBS NewsHour and is the NBC News Presidential Historian. He is a trustee of the White House Historical Association and the National Archives Foundation and he also sits on the board of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Michael Beschloss was inducted as a Laureate of The Lincoln Academy of Illinois and awarded the Order of Lincoln (the State's highest honor) by the Governor of Illinois in 2004 in the area of Communications and Education. Derived from a Kirkus review: Presidential historian Beschloss demonstrates his erudite grasp of the history of the executive branch. The Founders gave Congress the power to "declare"; the executive has power only to repel attacks. The author begins with the War of 1812 and notes that it was the most unpopular war ever, including Vietnam. In all American wars, opponents have been marginalized as unpatriotic, but Lincoln and the Civil War were different. He wouldn't ask Congress for a declaration of war because he would never accept the legality of secession. He did, however, wait patiently for the attack on Fort Sumter, and his extraordinary authority was affirmed by Congress and the courts. The Spanish-American War was triggered by the explosion of the Maine in Havana Harbor. It gave President William McKinley the chance to annex Hawaii. As he clearly shows throughout this illuminating narrative, during every war, the president has received extraordinary powers; some used it well, while others abused it. The author's highly readable style and ability to pinpoint the most relevant facts make this a perfect book for any student of American history and its presidents. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].
