XX INTRODUCTION: This catalog is a successor to WOOL TECHNOLOGY AND THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION, published in 1965 by the Merrimack Valley Textile Museum. The exhibit on which that catalog was based was installed in 1964 and was slightly revised on several occasions during the following decade. In 1975, with financial assistance from the National Endowment for the Arts, the exhibit was substantially changed and re-installed under the rubric "Homespun to Factory Made: Woolen Textiles in America, 1776- 1876" which has been adopted as the title of this catalog. Our aim is to present to a general audience the objects. and illustrations which document the techniques of woolen cloth making during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The text complements and interprets the exhibit materials. We hope this volume will fill a long-felt need for information about a subject which is widely discussed but difficult to understand. As this may be the only book in the English-speaking world which covers the subject in this fashion, we expect it will serve an audience which varies greatly in age and education. Suggestions from readers regarding the content of a future edition will be welcomed.
