Celle des tubes d'abord, puisqu'il ne reste qu'une fraction des nombreux types disponibles autrefois, mais heureusement suffisamment de bons. En fait, la grande pénurie est celle des connaissances. Q…uels sont les avantages d'un circuit aussi onéreux que le SRPP ? Qu'en est-il aujourd'hui des tubes à faible souffle ? On lit dans les livres usuels de l'époque des tubes que la pentode produit des harmoniques de rang 3 ; est-ce souhaitable ou regrettable ? Pourquoi le rendement des triodes plafonne-t-il à 25 % ? Les questions ne manquent pas et ce livre y répond à deux niveaux. La première partie de chaque chapitre expose la théorie, avec de petits montages, des courbes, des formules. Quand celles-ci sont simples, elles sont expliquées sur le champ. Le cas échéant les développements approfondis se trouvent dans la deuxième partie, théorique, du chapitre. En tête des paragraphes concernés apparaît la lettre T. Ainsi, le lecteur est guidé en fonction du niveau de lecture choisi. Quelques digressions historiques rappellent combien les constructeurs d'antan étaient inventifs et à quel niveau de connaissance ils étaient arrivés. Les premiers chapitres de ce livre expliquent la genèse et le fonctionnement des tubes ; puis viennent des circuits élémentaires, avec la théorie des étages de sortie, de correction de tonalité etc. Il y a ensuite deux chapitres sur la distorsion et le souffle, l'effet microphonique et autres bruits désagréables. Quatre chapitres sont consacrés à la description méthodique de projets complets, depuis le calcul de chaque composant jusqu'au choix de conception, avec de nombreuses astuces pour la réalisation pratique et la mesure des résultats. Pour rassembler ses connaissances théoriques et pratiques en matière d'amplification audio à tubes, l'auteur puise dans son expérience qui remonte à de nombreuses années avant l'introduction des semi-conducteurs. D'ailleurs ces composants modernes, transistors et circuits intégrés, sont utilisés aussi, mais seulement dans des sections qui ne se trouvent pas dans le chemin du signal. De plus, on utilise les transformateurs modernes à noyau toriques. In den ersten Kapiteln dieses Bandes wird auf Produktionsverfahren und die Arbeitsweise von Röhren eingegangen, anschließend werden deren Grundschaltungen ausführlich besprochen. Das gewonnene Wissen erfährt in den folgenden Abschnitten eine theoretische Vertiefung bei der genaueren Betrachtung von Endstufen, Klangregelungen usw. Zudem wurden zwei gesonderte Kapitel aufgenommen, die sich mit Klirrverhalten und Verzerrungen, Rauschen, Mikrofonie und anderen Störgeräuschen befassen. In vier weiteren Kapiteln werden vollständige Verstärker-Entwürfe und die Dimensionierungsberechnungen aller Baugruppen im Einzelnen unter Hinweis auf die zugehörigen theoretischen Überlegungen der vorherigen Kapitel vorgestellt.
