Les administrateurs du moyen âge, aussi bien les administrateurs ecclésiastiques que les administrateurs laïques, se sont souciés assez peu de faire rédiger des états, qui les auraient renseignés sur les limites exactes de la circonscription confiée à leurs soins et sur la constitution territoriale de celle-ci. Dans la pratique on vivait sur la coutume et celle-ci, dans ce domaine comme dans tant d autres, remplaçait les documents écrits, qui nous paraissent aujourd hui indispensables à toute administration. Toutefois la coutume se révéla insuffisante le jour où la fiscalité entra en jeu, car il devint dès lors nécessaire de tenir à jour la liste des bénéfices, ainsi que le montant de la taxe imposée à chacun d eux, faute de quoi tout contrôle aurait été impossible. De fait la perception de procurations par l évêque, l archidiacre ou l archiprêtre à l occasion de la visite pastorale de leur circonscription, ou encore la perception de certaines redevances levées par l évêque à l occasion de la réunion du synode diocésain ont donné lieu à l établissement de listes de bénéfices avec la mention de la taxe imposée à chacun d eux. On trouvera dans le présent volume plusieurs de ces listes : l une d elles, qui provient de l évêché de Limoges, a même subi des additions, qui font de cette liste à but fiscal un véritable pouillé, au sens qui a été défini plus haut () "" ************************** ref 40bs-fd & 53e42.
