Dabei weisen seine verhangenen und oft traumverlorenen Seelen…landschaften keineswegs ins grelle Getriebe des Kunstbetriebs, sondern evozieren Gegenwelten von fundamentaler Verlorenheit. Die dort vorherrschende Spannung zwischen Figur und Bildraum, zwischen Individuum und gesellschaftlichem Kontext grundiert alle Arbeiten mit einer reflexiven Patina, die die Eindeutigkeit der Anschauung überlagert und die Konturenschärfe auflöst. Es wirkt, als würden kollektive Erinnerungsprozesse aufgerufen, die den Speichermedien der Fotografie- und Filmgeschichte entstammen und nun in malerischer Intensität nochmals, vielleicht auch in letztmöglicher Fassung, an die Oberflächen des Sichtbaren treiben. Eor quite some time, he has been working between the two opposing poles of insider tip and rising star. His murky, often dream-like landscapes of the soul have little to do with the garish machinations of the art business but rather evoke alternative, fundamentally lost worlds. The prevaili|ng tensions between figure and pictorial space, between individual and social context lend his work a reflexive patina, overlaying its visual clarity and blurring its contours. His pictures seem to be evoking collective memory processes, originating in the storage media of photographic or film history which, with the intensity of painting - perhaps even in some ultimate version - once more rise to the surface of the visible. At the same time, quite noticeably, common contemporary narrative is being completely ignored; instead, the visual elements remain programmatically indefinable, appearing as snapshots with hardly any narrative function at all. Thus Janis Avotins consciously avoids any implied meaning from teleologically transmitted stories, concentrating instead on the relationship between his subjects and the surrounding space, which he understands as an ontological constant.
