From the very outset of the decade, Lebel was instigating happenings; often politically them…ed; in Venice, Milan, London, Paris and New York, as the leading exponent for this new form of performance and a close associate of the Living Theater. In 1979 he founded the Polyphonix Festival, devoted to sound poetry and performance art. This hefty volume provides the most comprehensive overview of the life and oeuvre of this diversely talented figure. At its core are his happenings of the 1960s, all of which are documented with numerous illustrations and analyzed in detail by Alyce Mahon. Lebel's longstanding friend, the philosopher and psychiatrist Félix Guattari, supplies an essay on the artist's methods, and in an extensive interview Lebel discusses the importance of Deleuze and Guattari's concept of the "rhizome" for his work.

Eine Besonderheit dieser Sammlung ist, dass Thomas Olbricht nicht nur kostbare Einzelobjekte sammelt, sondern meist Reihen und Anreihungen von Werken zusammenträgt und zu einem neuen Ganzen zusammenfügt, innerhalb dessen sich Querverbindungen, Verweise, gegenseitige Attraktionen oder Abstoßungen ergeben. Unsere Ausstellung fokussiert genau diesen zentralen Bereich der Serien in der Sammlung Olbricht. Dabei legt sie den Schwerpunkt auf die Kunst des 20./21. Jahrhunderts und verfolgt, mit welchen Intentionen und mit welch weitem Radius der Rundumschau dieser Sammler "ein kaleidoskopisches Ensemble von Denkrichtungen, ein Archipel von sinnlich-leuchtenden und asketischen Inseln, von sensibel fluktuierenden Geweben, von Überzeugungen und Hinterfragungen, von ironischen Behauptungen und zarten Erinnerungsbildern" (Jean-Christophe Ammann) errichtet hat. Die enorme Spannweite dieser Sammlung, die sich der obsessiven Sammelleidenschaft Olbrichts verdankt, ist verbunden mit einer Fokussierung auf zentrale Themen des Menschseins, auf Zeit, Angst, Tod und Sexualität.
