Suivant la copie de la facture, il devait se composer d'environ 1-600 piece…s. Grace a un remarquable don complete par les porcelaines de l'ancienne collection, les Musees royaux d'Art et d'Histoire abritent actuellement plus de 70 pieces de ce service qui nous fait penetrer dans un monde de reve, celui de l'ornithologie chere aux encyclopedistes du XVIIIe siecle. La premiere partie de l'ouvrage comprend un historique de la manufacture de Tournai, une breve analyse de la personnalite du duc d'Orleans et de l'histoire du service proprement dit. La deuxieme partie est consacree a l'etude des decors-: les oiseaux, les camees et les ornements. Dans la troisieme partie l'etude de chaque forme veut integrer le service d'Orleans dans les usages de l'epoque. Pour chaque forme, l'auteur tente de retrouver son origine dans les autres manufactures europeennes, dans les autres contrees ou dans les autres arts et de la replacer dans la production de la manufacture de Tournai de 1750 au XIXe siecle. Une large part est reservee aux usages d'une table princiere de la fin du XVIIIe siecle. Abondamment illustre, a la fois scientifique et de vulgarisation, le livre a pour but d'interesser les specialistes, les collectionneurs et les amateurs.
