Softcover. Condition: As New. A catalog, published on the occasion of the exhibition held September 21 - October 23, 2021. A clown?s sad greasepaint and a wicked witch?s gaunt green, shadowed face are intriguing classics. Why so sad, why so angry? Miss America?s tiara framed, lipsticked, blinding white toothy smile is another. Why so happy? Ramping it up are Egyptian death masks, jeweled Venetian masks, and beaked Bwa masks, all reflecting our need to hide, elevate, and communicate identity, fear and desire. Though many express a delight in embellishment, many are seductively enigmatic, often frightening. Pamela Joseph is fascinated by this universal, timeless allure and presents, literally, a multi-layered presentation in Radical Beauty: Mask, Veils & Headgear, opening Friday, September 24 through October 23, 2021 at Michael Warren Contemporary in Denver, Colorado. The multi-layered pieces, conceived in her own drawings, come to life in clear and colored plexiglass, painted and collaged before (almost) coming to life. A scarce title.…

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Some light edgewear to dustjacket; else In Very Good+ condition and Very Good+ dustjacket. Landscapes of Colorado features the efforts of artists who have used the state's natural beauty as inspirations for their paintings and photographs. Art curator Ann Daley selected the artists. Some lived in Colorado only briefly, while others have spent their entire careers in the state. Daley also provides an essay linking each artist to the impressive history of Colorado, where for over a century painters and photographers have been attracted to its magnificent views and its crisp, clear light. Art critic Michael Paglia provides a profile of each of the artists. In writing about them, he takes into account key experiences in their development, as well as analyzing their varying styles, the techniques they embrace, and places them in the broader context of landscape art. The artists found in Landscapes of Colorado display a wide range of aesthetic approaches from neotraditional to contemporary realist. Landscapes of Colorado is an overview of the rich vein of contemporary art in Colorado. Uncommon in dustjacket.…

Hardbound. Condition: VG, DJ has some edge wear. White cloth boards w/ glossy color illustrated DJ, 319pp, profuse color and BW plates. From the publisher--The rise of abstraction in the first half of the 20th century and its firm establishment in the art of Colorado of the late 20th and early 21st centuries is the expansive topic taken up by Colorado Abstract: Paintings and Sculpture. This book marks the first time such an ambitious project has been undertaken that zeroes in on this visually rich yet virtually unexplored topic. In the late 19th century artists flocked to Colorado, drawn to the world-renowned scenery of the Rocky Mountains. These artists were quick to embrace European styles such as realism and impressionism, but their successors in the early 20th century were resistant to another Old World invention: abstraction. However, in the 1930s, some Colorado artists would begin to turn toward abstraction so much so that by the 1950s, this aesthetic mode was well entrenched and came to dominate the visual arts in the state. In the 1960s and 1970s, abstract artists in Colorado set a national standard. Today, in the first decade of the 21st century, the abstract sensibility is alive and well among the state's most accomplished painters and sculptors. Colorado Abstract: Paintings and Sculpture is co-authored by two well-known Denver art writers: Michael Paglia who selected all the artists featured, and Mary Voelz Chandler who authored individual discussions of each of the more than fifty contemporary abstractionists included. In addition, Hugh Grant of the Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Art has prepared a foreword.…

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 2007 Chronicle Books large format hardcover edition. Light reading wear else very good condition. The decorative quality of artist Rex Ray's highly collectible work has made it coveted in interior design as well as high-art circles. His colour-bursting, curvaceous art graces the walls of hip hotels and gourmet restaurants, yet it remains, as acclaimed author Douglas Coupland puts it in his foreword, unslick, but superslick at the same time. Meditations on repeated fluid forms, abstract yet handmade, with a retro-futuristic mid-century feel, Rex Ray's art is a rare combination of sophisticated and visually pleasing. The first monograph to span his career in various media - including paper cutouts, mixed-media collages, paintings, digital prints, and the highly admired graphic design and music packaging that launched his visual career - this is a trove of his sleek and lovely aesthetic.…
