Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a guide to early Christian and Byzantine antiquities in the British Museum. It covers a fascinating array of objects, from engraved gems and gilded glasses to cast ivory carvings and gold rings â" all of which offer insights into the beliefs and practices of early Christians. These antiquities reveal the geographical spread of Christianity from the second century, with examples from Egypt, Syria, Italy, Britain, and North Africa. The book explores the symbolism of the period, such as the use of the fish to represent Christ and the anchor to symbolize hope. It also examines the development of Christian art, from its indirect and symbolic nature to the more realistic depictions that emerged after the conversion of Constantine. The author traces the influence of pagan mythology and Eastern religious ideas on Christian art and symbolism, providing a rich and nuanced understanding of the diverse influences that shaped early Christian thought and expression. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Then, if I moved neither head nor limb, others would come, and yet others, leaping from branch to branch and plunging down from higher to lower levels like divers cleaving a deep green sea; until at last some slightest involuntary movement of mine would put the whole host to flight, and greybeards, young warriors, camp followers and mothers with their children on their backs would go crashing from tree to tree, screaming and gibbering like the shades of Homer's sapless dead.
