El propósito del presente trabajo es ofrecer un análisis del motivo de la muerte en la novela 'La última niebla' de María Luisa Bombal, que no consiste, solamente, en compararla mostrando cómo se trata el asunto en la literatura, la historia o en la vida real, sino, también, entender la importancia de la muerte para la autora chilena, la cual tuvo que separarse de muchos de sus seres queridos y a pesar de eso intentó recuperarse como mujer y como autora. Bombal, a través de la protagonista de La última niebla, lleva su relación con la muerte a un primer plano, tejiendo así todo el mundo interior de la protagonista.Se recurrirá, en el presente trabajo, a presentar pasajes del texto con los que ilustrar el sentido y la intensidad de su confrontación con la muerte. Se adoptará un punto de vista psicoanalítico tanto freudiano como gustaviano para explicar, por un lado, las dimensiones de la muerte en la vida, y por el otro, la tragedia sufrida por una mujer insatisfecha sexualmente. Con este objetivo, es de suma importancia observar los vaivenes de la protagonista cuya existencia se mueve entre el rechazo y la experimentación de la vida.
