So, important was the availability of this impromptu force that much grace and favour was bestowed on those providing it and, until such time as a national Navy was formed, the towns concerned benefited hugely. Though in succeeding centuries the privileges granted to the Ports have greatly receded, the Confederation still played a ceremonial role at the last Coronation and the post of Chief Warden - currently held by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and before her by Sir Winston Churchill and Sir Robert Menzies - remains a treasured one. Today the grouping is more a useful reason for a thematic tour and promotion as a tourist area than its former cause and here in lies the reason for this colourful book.
