Cloth. Condition: Fine. First Edition. Britain's maritime heritage is as dominant in the nation's history, development and current awareness as would be expected in an island race. Myths and legends, facts and fantasies, our coasts abound with the 'flavour' of the sea. Nowhere is this special aspect of our past more evident than in the south east corner of England where a remarkable group of ancient coastline towns etched their mark in our history by the creation of a unique confederation which retained stature and influence long after the purpose and value of the grouping had passed. To medieval Britain the Confederation of Cinque Ports was the country's - and the monarch's - guarantee of a navy. So, important was the availability of this impromptu force that much grace and favour was bestowed on those providing it and, until such time as a national Navy was formed, the towns concerned benefited hugely. Though in succeeding centuries the privileges granted to the Ports have greatly receded, the Confederation still played a ceremonial role at the last Coronation and the post of Chief Warden - currently held by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and before her by Sir Winston Churchill and Sir Robert Menzies - remains a treasured one. Today the grouping is more a useful reason for a thematic tour and promotion as a tourist area than its former cause and here in lies the reason for this colourful book. Oliver Mathews, who lives in the area, has captured the flavour and antiquity of the Cinque Ports in a series of beautiful studies which, with the accompanying text, will serve two purposes. The visitor will find it a useful guide, a stimulus to search out points of interest and a more pleasing memento than a dry history of the area whilst the resident will finally have a book of quality which truly demonstrates the beauty of the region and, thereby, probably their reason for living there. Illustrated. Photographs by Oliver Mathews.
