Then he spends the entire book proving that being a person is, frankly, much more complicated than being a simple bad guy. If you?ve met Pastor Gregorius before (as the repulsive old man in someone else?s story), this is his chance to step into the spotlight, straighten his dog collar, and plead his case. If you haven?t, don?t worry: all you need to know is that you?re about to enter the head of a man who is: Deeply pious, Deeply insecure, Deeply awkward about sex, And perhaps not nearly as monstrous?or as innocent?as he?d like to believe. It?s a novel about self-justification, self-delusion, and the strange lengths people go to in order to make their lives feel like they?re happening on purpose. What?s going on inside? Ohlsson lovingly reconstructs a world of: Dark-panelled rooms, church offices, and respectable parlours , where hypocrisy hangs in the air like incense. A pastor who is constantly trying to square his desires, his faith, and his spectacular ability to misunderstand other humans. A marriage that is technically functional in the way a broken clock is technically correct twice a day. Endless inner monologue in which Gregorius explains, excuses, revises and occasionally almost admits the truth to himself, before backing away and blaming circumstances, God, or other people?s weaknesses. This is not a heroic redemption arc. It?s more like watching someone write, edit, and footnote their own confession in real time, desperately trying to make sure they still come out looking sort-of alright. It?s funny in that quietly excruciating way, moving in spite of itself, and ideal if you like novels that make you feel deeply uncomfortable about judging anyone too quickly?especially old men in bad marriages. About this particular copy Condition is Good , which in the antique and mysterious language of second-hand books means: The cover is intact and presentable, with mild edge- or corner-wear suggesting it has been picked up, read, and put down by at least one sentient being. No structural horrors, no major tears?just the soft patina of a book that has seen a few bedside tables. The spine is in sensible working order. For the reader who loves a good villain backstory: Think of it as the clerical, Scandinavian version of ?But what if we heard his side??
