Add to basketLeather. Condition: Very Good Indeed. A profusely illustrated, beautifully bound copy of this scarce and important travelogue regarding South Africa. Taken from the letters and journals of British naturalist, Frank Oates. The second edition of this work. The first edition lost many copies in a fire at the publishers, with this s…econd edition not published until eight years later. This second edition sees an extended appendix. There are also slight additions to the narrative portion and extended footnotes on botanical points. The illustrations to this work are 'all from original drawings taken on the spot, or from the objects they purport to represent'. ''Some are from sketches by the late Frank Oates; the remainder- and these the larger number - from those of his brother W E Oates who accompanied him during a portion of his journey'. With a memoir of the author to the start of the work. Illustrated, with a frontispiece, six chromolithographs, thirty-nine woodcuts, fourteen coloured plates, and four folding maps. Collated, complete. To this work, Oates discusses the flora and fauna of this fine area in great detail, with accompanying illustrations. In particular, he describes the Baobab tree and many other natural sights that Europeans were not familiar with. This work is also one of the earliest accounts of Europeans witnessing the Victoria Falls. A truly lovely account of nineteenth century South Africa, adorned with stunning illustrations. In a half calf binding, with cloth covered boards. Externally, smart with just some light rubbing to the joints. Slight fading to the gilt at the spine. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, Alfred Edward Moxon. Gift inscription to the recto of front endpaper, 'To Jim From Ralph 107 Alderney Street London'. Prior owner's notes to the rear pastedown. Internally, firmly bound, with just some light straining in places. Pages are bright, with just the odd spots to pages, heavier to the first and last few pages. Plates remain bright and crisp, with just the odd handling mark. Very Good Indeed. W E Oates; Frank Oates' Charles Whymper et al. (illustrator). book.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Second British edition. 8vo. Frontispiece portrait of Frank Oates. xlix, 433 pp. Illustrated throughout, many from drawings and water-color drawings by Frank Oates and William Oates. Included are 6 chromolithographs in the text and 14 hand-colored plates in the Appendix. There are fo…ur fold-out maps. Bound in the original pictorial green cloth on beveled boards, stamped in gilt and dark brown. The second edition was greatly expanded over the first edition of 1881, including now the stunningly beautiful 14 hand-colored prints. This book was the Oates family copy and has the bookplates of William Edward Oates (who accompanied Frank on the journey herein related) and Robert Washington Oates on the front pastedown and front free endpaper respectively, and, notably, the bookplate of the late Frank Oates (1840-1875) on the verso of the rear free endpaper. Beneath Robert Oates' bookplate is a small printed label which reads "Presented by Robert Washington Oates" and above his plate is a blind stamp which reads "Gestingthorpe Hall | Castle Hedingham | Essex." This book later came from the library of England's most esteemed contemporary naturalist, Sir David Attenborough, whose SIGNATURE and date (May 1964) are on the verso of the front free endpaper. Light cloth wear at the extremities, else a very tight book. There is approximately a 1" x 1 1/2" chip on the top of the half title page which is stuck to the top of the next leaf. The interior, including all maps and prints are bright, foxing-free. A very good plus book. The second edition is much scarcer and more desirable than the first printing and this family association copy, later owned by Attenborough, is truly exceptional.
