Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. KENYA BY NORMAN LEYS 1925 SECOND EDITION INTRODUCTION BY PROF. GILBERT MURRAY. This is a very thoughtful book, written at a time when the world order was buoyed by the establishment of the League of Nations and many of the seemingly intractable questions of statehood and develo…pment were receiving attention. It was also written at a time when, at least according to the Introduction: The rule of black by white appears to be for the present time, an absolute necessity. Please find then: Kenya by Norman Leys, with an Introduction by Prof. Gilbert Murray. This medium-sized but rather thick hard cover book (6 x 9 x 2 inches, 409 pages plus 4 pages of publisher s adverts) was published by Leonard & Virginia Woolf at The Hogarth Press of London, dated 1925, and the Second Edition (so stated). The book is bound in light red cloth with gilt titles on the spine. It is inscribed from the Author but not signed by Leys. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are a bit dust-dulled with some loss of color, particularly on the back cover. The gilt on the spine is barely legible. The corners and spine tips are bumped but not excessively. Inside, the only mark I found is the Author s inscription on the front endpaper. There are some spots of soiling to the pages, particularly towards the front of the book but the interior pages otherwise are without toning or foxing. The page edges are spotted, probably tobacco smoke stain but no odor. Both hinges are intact but the binding is cracked elsewhere but still seems tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Language: ENG. Inscribed by Author(s).

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the concept of governing Africa through mandates, an approach emerging after the First World War. The author argues that mandates offer a unique opportunity to establish a new form of government that differs from traditional colonial rule. They propose that mandated…territories should be governed by a loose association of civilized states, the League of Nations, rather than by a single European power. The book delves into the political, social, and economic implications of this new governing system. The author emphasizes the importance of creating a free and democratic society in mandated territories, fostering economic development, and respecting the rights and traditions of the indigenous population. This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the mandate system, its potential benefits, and challenges, making it a valuable resource for those interested in African history, international relations, and the complexities of governing diverse societies. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - This book argues for a new approach to governance in Africa, using mandates rather than traditional forms of democracy. Drawing on historical examples and contemporary political theory, Leys proposes a system that emphasizes direct citizen participation and accountability. He also addresses the ch…allenges of implementing such a system in practice, including issues of corruption and minority rights. This thought-provoking work is essential reading for anyone interested in the future of African politics. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.This work is in the 'public domain in the United States of America, and possibly other nations. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'Kenya' is a seminal and critical examination of British colonial policy and its socio-economic impact on East Africa during the early 20th century. Written by Norman Leys, a medical officer with extensive first-hand experience in the region, this work provides a rigorous analysis of the in…justices inherent in the colonial administration, particularly regarding land ownership, labor exploitation, and the systemic marginalization of the indigenous population. The book serves as a powerful indictment of the imperial project, blending empirical observation with a passionate plea for social and political reform. Leys meticulously documents the displacement of native communities and the implementation of policies designed to benefit European settlers at the expense of African welfare. By addressing themes of racial inequality, economic disparity, and the ethical responsibilities of governing powers, 'Kenya' offers invaluable insights into the historical roots of modern East African society. This work remains a significant contribution to the study of African history and colonial studies, representing one of the earliest and most influential critiques of the British Empire from an internal perspective. It is an essential resource for those interested in the complexities of colonial governance, the history of East Africa, and the global struggle for human rights and self-determination.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
