Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers an accessible and detailed explanation of the provisions of the Local Government (England and Wales) Act of 1888, a pivotal legislative act that transformed local governance in England and Wales by creating a new type of elected body, the county council. The author provides a modern interpretation of the Act's implications for county councils and other local authorities, including their powers, duties, and relationships with each other. The authorâs extensive analysis is enhanced by incorporation of the full text of the 1882 Municipal Corporations Act and the County Electors Act of 1888 with related sections and notes. The Act covered a wide range of issues, including the transfer of administrative business from quarter sessions to county councils, the creation of joint committees for police governance, the establishment of a system for licensing stage plays and enforcing the Explosives Act of 1875, and the appointment of county coroners. The book is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of local governance in England and Wales, or who seeks a deeper understanding of the powers and responsibilities of county councils.
