Cette notion recouvre en fait des disciplines très différentes, scientifiques ou artistiques, parfois les deux, qui ont pour point commun l étrangeté, réelle ou apparente, de leur objet. Les orientalistes, formant très tôt une communauté scientifique à travers l Europe, ont parfois exagéré, ou caricaturé, cette étrangeté.
