Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 48 pages : illustrations ; 21 cm ; OCLC 2472187 ; "Our Soldier Boy" by George Manville Fenn is a historical novel written during the late 19th century. Set against the backdrop of the Peninsular War, primarily in Portugal, the narrative revolves around a young boy who becomes a beloved mascot for a British regiment after he is rescued from the horrors of war. The story examines themes of bravery, parental love, and the impact of conflict on innocent lives. The plot follows an eight-year-old boy who, after a horrific attack by the French on his family's villa, is left severely injured and without memory of his past. Rescued by a corporal of the 200th Fusiliers, he soon becomes affectionately known as "Dick," believing the corporal and his wife to be his true parents. Over time, he integrates into the regiment, showcasing courage during battles and ultimately saving the Colonel's life. As the story progresses, the true identities of his biological parents surface, leading to an emotional reunion. Through its vivid portrayal of war's aftermath, the novel highlights the resilience of the human spirit and the bonds formed in the face of adversity. ; Victor Venner (1869 - 1913) was a British painter, illustrator, and cartoonist active in England during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. Born Edgar John Victor Venner in the Totterdown district of Bristol in 1869, Venner became known for his humorous and characterful prints, cartoons, and lithographs that enjoyed popularity in the early years of the 20th century. Venner's work encompassed a range of subjects, but he is particularly remembered for lively sporting and genre scenes, especially those depicting golfers and other leisure activities of the day. His golf-themed prints - including works such as The Lucky Dog, Addressing the Ball, and The Golfers Link - blend keen observation with a light, often witty touch, reflecting both the growing popularity of golf and contemporary taste for illustrated humour. He contributed illustrations to Punch magazine, a key outlet for satirical and comic art at the turn of the century, and was associated with the London Sketch Club, a hub for professional illustrators and cartoonists. Venner's prints were often issued with copyright entries in London and widely circulated as popular art of the period. His work remains collectible today, with examples appearing regularly in auctions and print collections. He died in 1913, leaving a legacy tied to the vibrant culture of British graphic art in the early 1900s. ; Ernest Nister was a German publisher and printer, and was the inventor of the pop-up book, in Nuremberg and London ; slight wear, else VG.
