The lyrics to this song are derived from a poem by American lawyer and politician, Nathaniel Niles; it was written in 1775 and first published as a broadside in 1781, and was put to music by Andrew Law soon after under the title, *Bunker Hill*. This version by Bowles was first published in 1944. *OCLC* locates seven holdings.

Niles doesn't believe in the idea of sinners turning a new leaf "new heart" and being born again as good Christians. He says that sinners "have no more power to renew themselves, than the Ethiopian has to change his colour, or the Leopard his spots - that they are without strength-dead in trespasses and sins". He says that God doesn't expect something one doesn't have "God does not deem men criminal for not doing what they have any power to do", if one has no legs, he doesn't expect them to walk, no money, no expectation to pay, and sinners who can't repent are therefore not condemned.
