We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. A History of the Army Medical Department; Volume 1 and 2, Lieutenant General Sir Neil Cantlie K.C.B., K.B.E., M.C., MB.Ch.B., F.R.C.S., Late Director General Army Medical Service; Churchill Livingston, Edinburgh and London, 1974. First editions. "Presented to the Canadian Defence Liaison Staff by the RAMC Historical Museum, March 1995. Bookplates of John Boileau. Neil Cantlie was born on 11 December 1892 in Hong Kong, the youngest son of the late Sir James Cantlie and educated at Robert Gordon's College, Aberdeen, and Aberdeen University, where he graduated in medicine with honours in 1914. He served with the BEF in France and Flanders until 1919, taking part in the first Battle of Ypres, where he was slightly wounded. On the outbreak of the Second World War he was in charge of the surgical division of the Cambridge Military Hospital, Aldershot. He then commanded a casualty clearing station and a general hospital. As ADMS, 46 Division, he took part in the landings in North Africa, the capture of Tunisia, and the advance into Italy. His next appointment was 5th Corps in the rank of Brigadier from 1942 to 1944. From Italy he was posted to India as DDMS Eastern Command in the rank of Major-General from 1944 to 1946, during which period he was appointed honorary physician to the King. On his return to England, he was DDMS Southern Command from 1946 until he became Director-General Army Medical Services with the rank of Lieutenant-General. He was appointed honorary surgeon to the King Edward VII Convalescent Home, Osborne, Isle of Wight, an appointment he held until 1958. He was appointed KBE in 1949 and KCB in 1952. To Neil Cantlie, who had spent his whole active life in the Army, the Corps always had pride of place. His last memorial to it was his much acclaimed History of the Army Medical Department, published in 1974 (this book). These two volumes are an account of the British Army Medical Department, from the time of the institution of the Standing Army in 1660 to the formation of the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1896. The text contains numerous maps and there are a total of 4 foldout maps at the ends on the text blocks. Retired colonel John Boileau served in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps (RCAC) for 37 years and commanded Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians). In retirement, he was honorary colonel of the Halifax Rifles (RCAC) for 10 years. He is an author and a media commentator who specializes in military history and has written 600 articles and 14 books. Boileau was founding chair of the Halifax Military Heritage Preservation Society and chair of the National Council of Honorary Colonels. He is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, a Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Vice-Regal Commendation and a Commander Canadian Army Commendation. These two volumes, 519 and 448 pages plus maps, are in fine condition in fine dust jackets that are now encased in protective mylar wraps. A beautiful, important set of books on military medical corps, with a great provenance. …
