Elle constitue une sorte d'antichambre avant d'accéder à l'Académie des sciences et se charge de la promotion des travaux de ses membres, notamment à travers la publication de son Bulletin mensuel. La fermeture de l'Académie des sciences par la Convention et le décret du 8 août 1793 feront de la Société philomathique de Paris la seule détentrice des publications scientifiques de l'époque jusqu'à la réouverture des académies, sous le nom d'Institut, le 3 brumaire an IV (novembre 1795), et la reprise de leurs publications. Les philomathes sont, en 1797, au nombre de soixante-dix : l'association est alors contrainte de ne plus élire de membre que par voie de remplacement et de limiter ce nombre à cinquante. Parmi les philomathes les plus célèbres on peut citer Antoine Lavoisier, Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck, Gaspard Monge, Pierre-Simon de Laplace, Georges Cuvier, Louis Joseph Gay-Lussac, André-Marie Ampère, Augustin Louis Cauchy, Augustin Fresnel, Jean-Baptiste Boussingault, Claude Bernard, Marcellin Berthelot, Jean-Baptiste Biot, Henri Dutrochet (correspondant), Louis Pasteur, Siméon Denis Poisson, Henri Becquerel, et plus tard : Broglie, Joliot, Théodore Monod.

Recent works on zoochromes, such as those of D. L. Fox (1953), H. M. Fox and VEVERS (1960) and VUILLAUME (1969), have been concerned primarily with the chemic…al nature and the taxonomic distribution of these materials, and although function has been considered where relevant this has not been the centre of interest and certainly not the basis for the arrangement of the subject matter. Functional significance is a profitable focus of interest, since it is the one theme which can make biochromatology a discrete and integral subject, and because it is the main interest in all biological fields. At present chromatology seems to be a particularly schizoid subject since it is clear that in metabolic functions biochromes are acting in a chemical capacity whereas integumental pigments function mainly biophysically, in neurological and behavioural contexts. It is profitable to attempt an integration by studying the functions of as many chromes as possible, from all aspects.
